The Brixton Supper Cloth
Stitch-School were delighted to be awarded our first grant from Cultural Seeds funding from the Mayor of London which supports small community led projects providing culture for all within the boroughs of London. Our proposal was The Brixton Supper Cloth as part of Brixton Design Trail, to create a community art work - The Brixton Supper Cloth - for the people by the people for which took part in Brixton Library 17th - 23rd September 2018.
We met so many lovely people during the seven day residency in Brixton Library which opens its doors to all. Many participants returned enjoying working around the table, learning new skills, gaining confidence with their own creativity or just enjoying working collaboratively.
During the week long residency we observed the joy of people working together, conversations around stitch structures, sharing knowledge or just some local news. The Brixton Supper Cloth brought people together from all cultures, age groups and social classes with the stitching the common activity. The power of making together to create a public art for a local space gives the community a purpose, a goal and in return united pride.
We had many insightful conversations around the table and it was enriching to see the local community enjoy the making of the cloth. We would like to thank all the people of Brixton who came, Brixton library for hosting and Cultural Seeds funding and Brixton Design Trail.
The Brixton Supper Cloth will go on display in Brixton Town Hall in November which we will announce soon!
